‘Port Eye’: Dubai launches region’s first AI-powered smart drone system
New system slashes inspection time from hours to minutes
DUBAI – In a groundbreaking stride toward digital transformation and environmental stewardship, the Dubai Ports Authority (DPA), under the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), has unveiled “Port Eye”, the Middle East’s first smart aerial monitoring system powered by autonomous drones and artificial intelligence.
The innovation aims to elevate safety standards, enhance environmental monitoring, and streamline port inspections across Dubai’s maritime zones.
Equipped with 4K thermal imaging cameras and advanced environmental sensors, these AI-driven drones operate autonomously through a centralised control network. The system delivers real-time visual feeds and instant analytics, minimising manual intervention in hazardous environments. Port Eye also contributes to the UAE’s Green Agenda 2030 and Net Zero 2050 initiatives by improving energy efficiency and emission tracking.
What does Port Eye do?
According to Captain Ibrahim Al Blooshi, Executive Director of the Dubai Ports Authority, the project marks “a quantum leap” in Dubai’s maritime digital transformation. Inspection times have dropped from four hours to just fifty minutes, allowing faster, data-backed decision-making and safer operations. The system’s unique combination of real-time analytics and rapid environmental response sets it apart as the first of its kind in the region.
How does it detect emissions?
Each drone features fully autonomous navigation, AI-enabled image and video processing, and advanced sensor arrays capable of measuring sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and other pollutants. These readings are visualised in a 3D interactive dashboard directly linked to DPA’s command and control centre, enabling immediate alerts and predictive maintenance.
Inspection efficiency
Initial results show inspection efficiency has risen by over 60% compared to manual operations. Beyond speed, Port Eye’s intelligent sensors detect ship emissions, track marine pollution, and ensure compliance with international environmental standards.
